We are looking for a
System Engineer - Advanced Technology
Apply
Role Description
Nova is looking for a System Engineer to join the Advanced Technology Group and contribute to multidisciplinary optical and electro-optical systems for the semiconductor industry.
In this individual-contributor role, you will take ownership of system requirements, architecture, subsystem specifications, and system performance. Reporting directly to the Project Manager, you will work closely with specialists in physics, optics, mechanics, electronics, motion control, software, algorithms, and applications to translate technical needs into practical, verifiable engineering solutions.
You will be part of a small, hands-on team that combines an entrepreneurial approach with the expertise and resources of a global technology company. The role calls for someone who sees the complete system, works effectively with evolving requirements, and takes initiative wherever the team needs support.
Responsibilities
What will you be doing:
- Own and maintain system requirements, translating application needs and project objectives into measurable specifications and acceptance criteria.
- Define and maintain the system architecture, including subsystem requirements, interfaces, dependencies, and performance budgets, in close collaboration with discipline specialists.
- Evaluate technical alternatives and tradeoffs, balancing system performance, robustness, complexity, cost, and development timelines.
- Define system performance targets and verification methods; analyze experimental results and track gaps between expected and demonstrated performance.
- Work hands-on with the team to plan and execute experiments, investigate system behavior, and use Python-based analysis to guide engineering decisions.
- Partner with engineering teams on subsystem integration, calibration, and troubleshooting, helping resolve cross-disciplinary issues and verify corrective actions.
- Assess the system-level impact of design changes, identify technical risks and missing requirements, and follow open issues through to resolution with the relevant owners.
- Document requirements, architecture decisions, technical tradeoffs, and performance results; communicate findings clearly to the Project Manager and collaborating teams.
Requirements
Must Have
- B.Sc. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Optics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 3 years in multidisciplinary system engineering. The remaining experience may be in a closely related engineering or applied-physics role.
- Practical experience defining system requirements, architecture, subsystem specifications, and performance criteria for complex multidisciplinary systems.
- Hands-on proficiency in Python for engineering analysis, experimental data processing, and automation.
- Strong data-analysis and problem-solving skills, with experience using real-world measurements to evaluate performance and support technical conclusions.
- Ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines and communicate requirements, technical findings, and tradeoffs clearly in written and spoken English.
- Willingness to travel internationally approximately once per quarter.
Advantages
- Ph.D. in Physics or a related scientific or engineering discipline.
- Experience with optics, electro-optical systems, cameras, or imaging technologies.
- Experience with motion control, electronics, mechanical subsystems, or hardware-software interfaces.
- Experience in experimental design and structured performance characterization.
- Experience developing semiconductor equipment or working in a related multidisciplinary technology environment.
- That special something you bring in:
- Broad ownership and initiative: you anticipate gaps, raise risks early, and help move important work forward beyond your immediate area of responsibility.
- System-level thinking and attention to detail: you understand how individual engineering decisions affect the complete system and its performance.
- A hands-on, resourceful approach: you move comfortably between technical specifications, laboratory work, and data analysis to turn uncertainty into actionable decisions.
- Adaptability and sound judgment: you work independently, prioritize effectively as needs evolve, and balance fast progress with rigorous verification.
- A collaborative mindset: you respect each discipline's expertise, share information openly, and stay engaged until the team reaches a verified solution.
